Private Equity

I find that there is a unique elegance in how the private equity (PE) industry works. While venture capitalists and startups work together to build new businesses and listed companies create value for their public shareholders, PE usually invests in firms that have seen better days.

It reminds me of how my grandparents invested in residential properties. They targeted older units in overlooked areas rather than shiny, new developments. They raised nine children by packing them into tiny rooms while renting out one room to generate income. In this way, they took undervalued assets and generated wealth for generations to come.

PE takes a similar long-term approach. The PE value creation process is a journey shared by investors, managers and employees to drive sales/margin growth, reduce costs and improve capital efficiency. While many corporate environments grate with friction from competing agendas, alignment is intentionally created and maintained in a PE environment. All stakeholders understand that while the process may be intense, it is only by working together to create a strong, valuable company that the desired return for investors and job stability for employees is produced.

Growth

I started out as a medical science graduate in a PE portfolio company with little understanding of how business worked. Over time, I was assigned to lead projects and departments that were entirely outside my expertise - simply because I was the only person available and affordable. After starting my career as a personal assistant, I became the same company’s Managing Director for Asia within ten years.

We at Denarius Consulting understand that in businesses, as in life, great value is created when imperfect people from different backgrounds and cultures can work together towards a common goal. It takes alignment, through setting aside the things that divide to focus on those that unite. And while we recognize that while alignment requires effort, there are few experiences more rewarding than achieving a goal as a team.

The Denarius

A Denarius was a Roman silver coin that at one time was worth a day’s wages. For me, the Denarius represents the joy of being productive and the dignity of work. These values are still relevant to all stakeholders in a business today, whether for investors, managers or workers.

We walk with investors through strategic and operational decisions, support managers as they drive change and help workers find meaning in their work as they become the best version of themselves.
